SEO vs GEO: Why They're Not the Same Thing
SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you cited in AI answers. Here's why AU Shopify founders need both — and what to build first.
The Distinction Most Agencies Miss
SEO and GEO are not the same thing. They are not different names for the same strategy. They answer different questions — and right now, most AU Shopify stores are only answering one.
SEO answers: “Do I appear in ranked search results when someone types a query?”
GEO answers: “Am I cited inside the AI-generated answer that now appears above those ranked results?”
The difference is not cosmetic. When Google displays an AI Overview, the buyer reads the AI answer first. The ranked links below it get a fraction of the attention they used to. A brand cited inside the AI answer captures intent before anyone clicks. A brand ranked #1 below it is competing with an algorithm for the attention that remains.
Why AU Is 12-18 Months Behind the US
US brands started building GEO authority in late 2024. The shift in search behaviour happened faster there — Google’s AI Overviews rolled out to US users first, Perplexity gained significant US user share, and ChatGPT’s shopping integrations launched in the US market initially.
In Australia, the shift is accelerating. 14% of AU shopping queries now return AI Overviews — up from 2.1% four months ago. 64% of AU consumers now use AI tools for product research before purchasing. The window to build first-mover GEO authority in most AU Shopify niches is open right now. It will not stay open.
The First Three Structural Steps for a Shopify Store
Getting cited in AI answers is not about gaming an algorithm. It is about being structurally legible to AI systems. Here is where to start:
1. Schema markup. AI systems need to parse your brand as a structured entity. Install Product, Organization, and FAQ schema across your key pages. Most Shopify stores have none, or have it broken. A store with complete schema markup is significantly more citable than one without.
2. Content that answers real buyer questions. AI cites sources that answer questions thoroughly and specifically. If someone asks ChatGPT “what is the best natural sunscreen for sensitive skin in Australia,” the answer will cite the source that answers that question most completely. Does your product content answer category questions at that level of specificity? Most Shopify product pages describe the product. They do not answer the question.
3. Third-party citation signals. AI systems weight third-party mentions. A brand mentioned across niche media, review platforms, and community forums in their category is more citable than a brand mentioned only on their own domain. Review architecture — volume, recency, and specificity of reviews on Google, Trustpilot, and category-specific platforms — is a direct GEO signal.
SEO and GEO need each other. SEO builds the organic authority that makes AI systems trust your domain. GEO builds the structural signals that make AI systems cite your brand. Running only one is building with one hand behind your back.
