Topical Authority Is the New Backlink
Buying backlinks is dead. Buying topical authority is what agencies now sell wrong. We show what a real cluster looks like for a DTC Shopify brand.
Buying Backlinks Was Dead. Buying Authority Is Next.
Every founder in DTC has been sold backlinks. Every founder in DTC will now be sold topical authority. Most of the agencies pitching the second thing are doing it the same wrong way they pitched the first.
The mechanism has changed. The grift has not. Ten years ago the pitch was “we will build 200 backlinks for your store.” Today the pitch is “we will publish 60 blog posts to build your topical authority.” Same math. Different label. Same result: budget spent, needle unmoved, agency retained on hope.
Google is not counting your blog posts. Google is measuring whether you have credibly become the source in your category. That is a different game than volume, and it is the game every SEO for Shopify engagement we run is designed around.
What Backlinks Used to Buy You
For roughly a decade, backlinks were the dominant ranking signal for competitive queries. Get enough links from reasonable-authority sites and you climbed. The Penguin update in 2012 put pressure on manipulative link building. The Google leak of the Content Warehouse API docs in 2024 confirmed what technical SEOs suspected. Link signals still matter, but the weightings shifted meaningfully toward topical and site-quality signals.
The 2024 and 2025 Helpful Content updates hammered the sites that had been surviving on links and thin content. Sites built on genuine topical depth largely held. Cluster-built sites in fact grew.
The shift is not “backlinks stopped mattering.” The shift is “backlinks alone stopped being enough to move you if the underlying content did not deserve to move.”
What Topical Authority Actually Means to Google
Topical authority is not “you published a lot of posts about this topic.” It is a measured signal that your domain is a credible primary source in a specific subject area.
Google appears to measure this through a mix of signals we can only partially observe from outside.
Depth. Do you cover the topic across multiple angles, sub-topics, and query variations, or do you have one shallow post?
Interconnection. Are your pieces on the topic linked to each other in a way that signals a real hierarchy?
External corroboration. Are you cited or mentioned by other sources in that topic area?
Behavioural signal. When users land on your topic content from search, do they stay, or do they bounce back to the SERP to try another result?
You do not need to game these signals. You need to earn them. That is the entire methodology.
Cluster Architecture for a Shopify Store
Every well-built topical cluster we have shipped follows the same architecture. It is not novel. It is disciplined.
Pillar page. One deep authoritative page that covers the topic broadly. For a Shopify store, this is almost always a category page rather than a blog post. See Category Pages Are Your Highest-Leverage SEO Asset for the full argument.
Spoke pages. Four to eight supporting pages that go deep on specific sub-topics, use cases, or buyer questions. For DTC, some of these are blog posts. Some of them are collection sub-pages. Some are FAQ or buyer guide pages.
Product pages. The commercial endpoints. Linked to from the pillar and spokes wherever relevant. This is where the intent converts.
The pillar and spokes internal-link tightly. Each spoke links up to the pillar and across to two or three other relevant spokes. The pillar links down to every spoke. Products link back up to the pillar via breadcrumb and contextual links.
That is the whole structure. Any decent SEO tool can visualise it. Any founder can implement it. Most do not. Most publish disconnected blog posts and wonder why nothing ranks.
The Jet Level Aviation Cluster
We ran this play in 2024 for Jet Level Aviation, an AU aviation services brand. Their starting position was low organic visibility across a narrow set of category-specific queries.
We built one cluster. One pillar page on their primary service category. Six spoke pages that answered the specific questions their ICP was actually asking. Internal-link structure that connected all seven pages into a graph. Schema markup on every page.
No backlink outreach. No PR campaign. No paid promotion of the content.
Over six months the cluster produced a 1,582% lift in organic visibility and 1.97 million impressions on a service-category site that had been almost invisible before. The rankings compounded across the cluster, not just on the pillar. Every spoke pulled its own weight and reinforced the pillar. That is what a working cluster looks like.
The Publishing Cadence That Works
Weekly blog posts do not build topical authority. They build a graveyard of thin content that dilutes the signal on any post that might have ranked.
The cadence that works is closer to this. One deep piece per month, at 1500 to 2500 words, on a single sub-topic within an existing cluster. Every piece internal-linked into the cluster structure. Every piece with schema. Every piece with genuine buyer-answering content, not keyword-optimised filler.
Twelve pieces a year, done well, in one or two clusters, outperforms 52 pieces a year across a dozen disconnected topics. This is not our opinion. This is what shows up in every credible test of content strategy in the last three years.
The founders who fail at this fail because they cannot resist the urge to publish widely. Every quarter they get excited about a new topic. They add three posts on a new subject to the calendar. Three months later those posts have zero traffic and they have diluted the authority they were building elsewhere.
Discipline is the whole game.
The Three-Cluster Rule for DTC
For a Shopify store between $150K and $1M ARR, we recommend building no more than three clusters at any given time.
Cluster one: your primary category (e.g., “natural sunscreens”).
Cluster two: your highest-margin sub-category (e.g., “sunscreens for sensitive skin”).
Cluster three: a use-case or occasion cluster (e.g., “reef-safe travel sunscreen”).
That is it. Three pillars. Fifteen to twenty spoke pages. One deep piece added to each cluster per month, rotating.
Three clusters is enough to be legible as a topical authority in your category. It is few enough to actually resource. It compounds. And it leaves runway to open a fourth cluster in year two once the first three are ranking.
Trying to build ten clusters at once is what most agencies pitch and it is why most stores end year one with 60 blog posts and no rankings.
What This Looks Like Alongside GEO
Topical authority is the SEO signal. It is also the primary GEO signal that LLMs weight when deciding what to cite in AI answers.
A brand that has built a real cluster in their category is far more likely to be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity than a brand that has one shallow blog post. This is not a coincidence. Both search engines and LLMs are trying to identify credible primary sources. The signals they use overlap heavily.
Ship a cluster. Rank in SERPs. Get cited in AI answers. Same work. Two payoffs.
The Discipline
If you do only one thing in the next six months, do this. Pick your one primary category. Audit whether you have a real cluster on it. If not, build one. Pillar page (probably your top collection page). Six spokes over six months, one per month. Internal links across all seven pieces. Schema everywhere.
Stop publishing widely. Stop chasing keyword lists your agency generated. Stop asking whether backlinks or content matters more. Ship one real cluster. Watch it compound.
That is what topical authority actually is. Not a metric. Not a service you buy. A structural investment in becoming a credible primary source on one thing. Once you have done it once, you know how. Doing it three times is a compounding asset for the life of the business.
The agencies selling volume are selling the old game. The founders winning the new one are building fewer, deeper, better-connected clusters. Choose the second. If you want us to sketch a cluster with you, book a 30 min diagnostic.

Why Programmatic SEO Is a Trap for Sub-$1M DTC
Programmatic SEO is being sold as a shortcut. For a Shopify store under $1M ARR it is a trap. Here is when it works, and the play that beats it.
Category Pages Are Your Highest-Leverage SEO Asset
Founders blog because agencies told them to. Meanwhile category pages, the ones with commercial intent, sit unoptimised. Here is the highest-leverage fix.
Schema Markup That Actually Gets You Cited in AI Answers
Most Shopify stores have schema. Most Shopify stores have broken schema. Here is the exact block we ship on every audit and how to verify it works.
