Mobile CVR Is the Whole Game Now

The 27-Inch Design, 6-Inch Buyer

Every founder we work with designed their store on a 27-inch monitor. Every buyer they sell to reads it on a 6-inch phone.

That gap is not cosmetic. Mobile now accounts for 75 to 85% of Shopify sessions across most DTC brands. Mobile CVR remains 40 to 60% below desktop CVR on the same stores. So mobile is most of the traffic and most of the conversion opportunity that is currently being wasted. This is where forensic CRO earns its keep.

The gap is the game.

Seven Issues, Ranked

Across the audits we ran in the last twelve months, the same seven issues show up on more than 80% of Shopify stores. Ranked by revenue impact, largest first.

One: The Scroll Floor Above the Money Content

On mobile Shopify product pages we routinely find that 50 to 75% of buyers never see the third product image. Two thirds never reach the reviews. Almost none see the FAQ.

The Lhasa Remedy audit in our case studies surfaced a 25.42% scroll depth on the mobile product page. Three quarters of the page was never viewed by the average visitor. Every trust signal placed below that point was invisible to the majority of buyers.

The fix is not making the page shorter. It is reordering the page so the money content sits above the scroll floor. Above-the-fold order for mobile: product images (with swipe indicator visible), price, primary variant selector, ATC button, one killer proof point (top review or rating), delivery estimate. Everything else moves below.

We track this fix producing 15 to 30% mobile CVR lift on average across our client base.

Two: The CTA That Lives Where No Thumb Reaches

The average human thumb reaches roughly the bottom 60% of a phone screen comfortably. The top 40% requires a hand shift. If your primary ATC button lives in the top of the viewport or, worse, requires scroll to reach, you are asking every mobile buyer to reposition their grip. Some of them will not.

The fix is a sticky ATC button. Anchored to the bottom of the viewport once the buyer scrolls past the primary product image. This is a standard feature in modern Shopify themes but half the stores we audit have it disabled or misconfigured.

Second-order effect. Sticky ATC also solves the problem of the buyer being reminded of their intent as they scroll through reviews. They read a good review, look up, see the ATC button already at their thumb. Tap. Done.

Three: The Wrong Keyboard on Form Fields

Every form field on mobile triggers a keyboard. If the code did not specify the input type properly, the wrong keyboard opens. A card number field with a text keyboard forces the buyer to switch to numeric mid-entry. An email field without email autocomplete requires typing the address in full.

The fix is proper input type attributes on every mobile form field. inputmode="numeric" on card number and expiry. inputmode="email" with autocomplete="email" on email fields. autocomplete="tel" on phone. autocomplete="street-address" on address.

Two-hour dev change. Consistent 3 to 8% checkout completion lift on mobile.

Four: Missing Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay

The single most effective mobile checkout accelerator is the wallet payment. A buyer with Shop Pay set up completes checkout in three taps. A buyer with Apple Pay set up completes in two.

Half the Shopify stores we audit have these accelerators disabled, buried below the standard card entry field, or configured to show up only after the buyer has already filled out shipping information.

The fix is to enable all three and surface them at the top of the payment step. Not the bottom. Shop Pay first for repeat Shopify buyers, Apple Pay and Google Pay second. Card entry as the fallback for buyers without wallet accounts.

Shopify’s own reported numbers on Shop Pay lift are aggressive. Independent operators peg the real lift lower. Both agree the direction is up. Turn it on.

Five: The Image Size Nobody Compresses

The largest single mobile page weight offender across the audits we run is uncompressed product images. Shopify’s default image handling is decent. Theme developers routinely override it with <img> tags that fetch full-resolution originals. A 2400px wide hero image served to a 400px viewport is 8x more bytes than needed.

The fix is responsive image handling with proper srcset and sizes attributes. Shopify’s Liquid img_url filter with responsive sizing handles this. Most themes ship with it. Some do not. Audit yours.

The impact on mobile is not just page weight. Slower pages have measurably lower CVR. Google’s own research on Core Web Vitals has linked LCP performance directly to conversion outcomes across ecommerce.

Six: INP That Punishes Interaction

Interaction to Next Paint is the newest Core Web Vital, replacing First Input Delay in 2024. It measures how long the page takes to visually respond to a tap.

On mobile Shopify stores, INP failures usually come from three sources. Overloaded third-party scripts firing on tap. Product variant selectors that block the main thread while updating. Add-to-cart handlers that make network requests before providing visual feedback.

The fix pattern is the same for all three. Provide instant visual feedback on tap (button state change, spinner, colour shift) before doing the network work. The perceived responsiveness matters more than the actual response time.

Google is weighting INP heavily on mobile. Fix it because it moves rankings. Fix it because it moves conversion. Same fix.

Seven: The Sold-Out Item In the Add-to-Cart Flow

We covered this in The Checkout Leakage Audit but it deserves repetition here because it disproportionately affects mobile.

Mobile buyers are less likely to notice the sold-out flag on the variant selector before tapping ATC. They tap. The cart loads. They see the “sold out” messaging. They leave.

A US DTC wellness brand we audited was routing 47% of ATC clicks to sold-out variants on mobile. The finding was invisible in Shopify Analytics. It was screaming in Microsoft Clarity heatmaps.

Fix: real-time inventory check on the variant selector that disables ATC before the tap. Standard theme setting on modern themes. Underused.

The Two Numbers to Watch

Mobile CVR and mobile ATC-to-purchase rate. Weekly. Same spreadsheet as The Three Numbers Every Shopify Founder Should Watch.

Mobile CVR: total mobile purchases divided by total mobile sessions. If this is more than 20 percentage points below desktop CVR, something above is broken. Fix.

Mobile ATC-to-purchase: mobile sessions with ATC that resulted in purchase divided by all mobile ATC sessions. Healthy: 30 to 40%. Most stores we audit: 15 to 22%. That gap is the checkout flow failing on mobile specifically.

The Rule We Cannot State Strongly Enough

Design mobile first. Not “design responsively.” Design the mobile experience as the primary experience. Test on a real phone, not a desktop simulator. Show it to a friend on their phone. Watch them try to buy.

Desktop is the promo copy. Mobile is the business.

The seven issues above are the ones we find on 80% of stores. They are not the only issues that exist. They are the ones that consistently move the number when fixed. Ship them in order. Watch mobile CVR climb. Report back. Or book a 30 min diagnostic and we’ll walk your store together.
