Does Ranking on Google Mean AI Assistants Cite You?
Does a Google ranking mean AI cites you? Eight studies compared: the overlap is partial, depends on the tool, and what a Shopify store should do about it.
Quick answer: Partly. A Google ranking improves your odds of being cited in Google’s AI Overviews but does not guarantee it: in the three studies that measure the share of AI Overview citations coming from top-ten pages, it ranged from about 17% to 43%, and studies using wider measures found more. For ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot the overlap in the studies I read was mostly in single digits to the low teens. The studies disagree because they measure different things, so treat any single overlap figure with suspicion. For a Shopify store, keep earning rankings and also build pages that answer the follow-up questions a buyer asks.
If you have spent a year earning page-one rankings, the obvious question is whether they carry over to ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers. The honest answer is a long one, because the numbers people quote in reply are all over the place. You will see 76%, 38%, 17% and 12% in the same week, each stated as if it were the answer.
So I opened the studies at their own pages and wrote down what each measured, when, on how much data and who ran it. I also read what Google and OpenAI say in their own documentation. Everything below is as at 31 October 2026, and I give dates throughout because AI search changes fast. It is general guidance, not a promise about any store’s results.
What Google says about its own AI features
Start with the one party that can describe how its own system works. Google’s Search Central page on AI features (last updated 10 December 2025 on the version I read) says:
- To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements and no other special optimisations are necessary.
- Both features may use “query fan-out”: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response, which Google says lets it show a wider and more diverse set of links than classic search.
- AI Overviews are only shown when Google’s systems decide they add something to classic Search, so they often do not trigger.
Google’s longer guide, “Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search” (last updated 10 July 2026 on the version I read), adds that these features are rooted in Google’s core ranking and quality systems, and that optimising for generative AI search is, from Google’s perspective, still SEO. Under “what you don’t need to do” it lists llms.txt files and other special markup, “chunking” content, rewriting content just for AI and overfocusing on structured data, and it says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. It adds that creating an llms.txt file is fine if you want to, just not required for Google Search. We covered those in seven GEO myths Shopify founders still hear.
The pages I read do not say how often a ranked page is chosen, or that ranking and being cited are the same thing. That gap is why third parties run studies.
Why there is no single overlap number
“Overlap” sounds precise, but most of the disagreement comes from how it is defined. Before you read any figure, ask five questions.
- Which direction? “Of the pages the AI cited, how many also rank in the top ten?” gives one number. “For how many searches did at least one cited page also rank?” gives a much higher one.
- URL or domain? If the AI cites a different page from a site that ranks, a domain count calls that overlap and a URL count does not.
- Top ten, top twenty or top hundred? The wider the net, the bigger the number.
- Which AI feature? AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity each retrieve differently.
- Which searches, when and where? Long-tail questions, “best X” queries, random keywords and only searches that triggered an AI Overview give different results, as do the month, country and device.
With those in mind, here are the studies.
Eight studies, side by side
First, studies of Google’s own AI features.
| Study | What it measured | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs, 2 March 2026. 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs, from its Brand Radar tool. The article does not state the country. | Share of URLs cited in AI Overviews that also appear in the same query’s results. | 37.9% in the first ten results blocks (all result types), 31.2% in positions 11 to 100, 31.0% beyond 100. Organic links only: 37.1%, 26.2% and 36.7%. |
| Conductor, page updated 25 September 2026. 167,867,680 AI Overview citations from U.S. Google searches, 15 June to 15 August 2026. | Share of citations from pages in the organic top ten, and how often each organic position is cited. | 43% of citations came from top-ten pages and 57% from outside. Position 1 was cited 24.9% of the time, position 2 21.1%, position 3 17.9%, position 10 10.2%. |
| seoClarity, updated October 2025. 362,000 U.S. desktop queries, all of which triggered an AI Overview on 12 October 2025. | Share of 5.1 million citations that came from the top 20 organic results. | 56% in the body of the page (its contents list says about 49%) came from the top 20 and 44% from beyond it. Position 1 was cited 43% of the time, position 20 about 7%. |
| BrightEdge, published 18 September 2025. Nine industries, May 2024 to September 2025, using its own parser. The page does not disclose the number of queries or define “overlap” precisely. | Overlap of AI Overview citations with organic rankings, and the share of citations from top-ten results. | Overlap rose from 32.3% to 54.5%. Only 16.7% of citations came from top-ten results. For e-commerce, overlap was 22.9%, up 0.6 points over the period. |
| Semrush, 21 July 2025. 5,000 random keywords across four intent types, over 150,000 citations, desktop. | Overlapping domains and URLs per query between each platform’s citations and Google’s top ten. | AI Overviews about 86% domain and 67% URL overlap. AI Mode about 54% and 35%. Perplexity over 91% and 82%. ChatGPT lowest. |
| SE Ranking, 29 August 2025 (data collected 20 June 2025). 10,000 U.S. keywords, non-logged-in. | Overlap between AI Mode sources and the organic top ten, and how stable AI Mode answers are. | 14% at URL level and 21.9% at domain level. For 17.9% of keywords there was no URL overlap at all. Across three same-day runs, only 9.2% of URLs matched. |
Now studies of AI assistants.
| Study | What it measured | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs, 11 August 2025. 15,000 long-tail prompts, run in Google and Bing and then put to AI assistants. ChatGPT data was collected in early July 2025. | Share of cited links that also rank in Google’s top ten (and Bing’s) for the same prompt. | Ahrefs’ headline: only about 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google’s top ten for the same prompt. Perplexity was the outlier at 28.6%. For the other assistants it says the figure hovers around 8%, and about 80% or more of their citations came from pages that did not rank for the prompt at all. |
| Chen, Wang, Chen and Koudas, arXiv, submitted 23 January 2026, revised 16 May 2026. 1,000 ranking-style queries (100 templates across 10 consumer topics such as laptops, skin care and athletic shoes). | Domain overlap, as a Jaccard score, between each AI engine’s cited domains and Google’s top-ten domains. | Mean overlap: GPT-4o 4.0%, Gemini 2.5 Flash 11.1%, Claude 4.5 Sonnet 12.6%, Perplexity Sonar Pro 15.2%. Medians: 0.0%, 8.5%, 8.7% and 14.3%. |
Four notes on reading these tables.
Most come from companies that sell the measuring tool. Ahrefs, Conductor, seoClarity, BrightEdge, Semrush and SE Ranking all sell SEO or AI-visibility software. That does not make the data wrong, but each chose its own sample and definitions. BrightEdge does not disclose how many queries it used, and seoClarity’s page gives two different totals for the same measure. Semrush’s method note says it counted overlapping domains and URLs per query but does not make clear what its percentage is a share of, so I would not set its 86% beside the others. The academic study is the clearest about method, though its Gemini runs used Google Search grounding.
These show correlation, not cause. Conductor says it did not set out to prove that ranking causes citation, and Semrush says correlation does not confirm causation. None of the studies changed a page’s ranking and watched its citations.
Jaccard is a stricter test. The academic study divides shared domains by all domains in either list, so a long cited list lowers the score even if every ranking domain is in it. Do not compare it with a “share of citations that rank” figure. Its main test used consumer “best X” queries, the kind many Shopify founders care about.
The studies that state a country used US searches. SE Ranking, Conductor and seoClarity say so; the others do not state one, and none says it sampled Australia. Australian results may differ. Our post on AI shopping in Australia tracks what is confirmed locally.
What the studies agree on, and where they split
Some patterns hold across independent samples.
- Overlap is partial for every tool tested. No study found AI citations simply mirroring the top ten.
- Higher rank means a better chance of citation. Conductor and seoClarity both show the rate falling as rank falls (24.9% against 43% at position 1, each on its own sample).
- Many citations come from outside the top ten. Ahrefs, Conductor, seoClarity and BrightEdge all show this for AI Overviews.
- Other assistants lean further from Google’s results. Ahrefs and the academic study found low overlap for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, with Perplexity closest to Google.
- Answers are unstable. SE Ranking found only 9.2% of URLs matched across three same-day AI Mode runs, and Ahrefs notes AI Overviews are probabilistic.
They split on the size of the overlap and which way it is moving. Ahrefs reported about 76% of AI Overview citations from the top ten in July 2025 and about 38% in March 2026, but says it improved its parsing and Google moved to Gemini 3 in between, so the two are not like for like. seoClarity found the average number of top-20 URLs per AI Overview fell from 5 in May 2025 to 3 in October 2025. BrightEdge found its overlap measure rising over 16 months. I cannot tell you overlap is rising or falling, and anyone stating one direction with confidence is choosing a study.
One BrightEdge detail is worth knowing but not building on: its page says e-commerce was the one industry where overlap stayed flat (22.9% in September 2025) and where AI Overview coverage fell. The sample is not described. It is a reason to test your own category, which I explain below.
The claim I left out: “overlap collapsed”
You may have seen a claim that the overlap between top Google results and AI citations fell from a large majority to a small minority. It is credited to a PR agency’s research and circulates in news summaries and vendor pages.
I looked for it where it should live. The two pages from that agency’s AI visibility reporting that I opened did not contain the figure. The second-hand versions I saw did not link to a method, so I could not tell whether it is by URL or domain, top ten or top hundred, or for which AI tool. It may be accurate for some narrow measure. I could not check it at the source, so I have not used it.
A quick test for any overlap statistic: can you find the sample size, date range, AI tool, URL or domain, and direction? If any are missing, it is a headline, not evidence.
Why a ranking does not carry over
Why would a page that ranks well not be the one cited? The documented reasons are few.
Documented by Google: its AI features use query fan-out, so an answer can draw on pages that rank for a related sub-question and not for your head term. Google’s own example: for “how to fix a lawn that’s full of weeds”, related searches might cover the best herbicides, removing weeds without chemicals and preventing weeds.
Documented by assistants’ makers or by studies: retrieval differs by assistant. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT’s search features, that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that it recommends allowing it. Ahrefs found Copilot had the highest overlap with Bing’s results and says Perplexity runs its own index. So ranking on Google is not the same as being retrievable by ChatGPT.
Hypothesis, not proven: Ahrefs says that with Gemini 3 it may be that fan-out queries play a bigger role in source selection. It presents this as a possibility, and so do I.
Semrush adds a nuance. Domains with more top-ten rankings tended to be cited more on every AI platform it looked at, but the platforms often cited a different page from the same domain than the one in the top ten. That is correlation again.
What AI answers favour: documented, plausible and unproven
Founders hear that AI answers favour clear, structured, quotable content, entity clarity and third-party mentions. Here is what the evidence says, graded plainly.
| Claim | What the evidence says | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Clear, well-organised pages | Google says people generally appreciate pages organised by paragraphs and sections with clear headings, and to write for people. It also says there is no need to chunk content for AI and no ideal length. | Documented for readers; no AI-specific benefit shown |
| Specific, sourced, quotable facts | A 2023 to 2024 research paper tested rewrites on a 10,000-query benchmark with a generative engine built for the test. Adding statistics, quotations and cited sources raised a visibility measure by up to about 40%; keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement. | Plausible, from one controlled test |
| Entity clarity (the brand and products being unambiguous) | Google says to keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date and structured data matched to visible text. I found no primary study that isolates “entity clarity” as a cause of citation. | Partly documented (data accuracy); the rest unproven |
| Third-party mentions | Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility (0.66 to 0.71) and YouTube mentions correlated most strongly (about 0.74). It says correlation is not causation. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. | Correlated; cause unproven; manufactured mentions discouraged |
Three points on the table:
“Structured” is the loosest term. Readable structure helps a person, and Google says you do not need to write in a special way for generative AI search. If someone says lists, tables or short blocks raise your citation rate, ask for the study. I found no primary one for Google’s features.
The paper behind “up to 40%” is real but narrow. It tested rewritten content on a generative engine the authors built using gpt-3.5-turbo, with a second check on Perplexity.ai, and measured how much of an answer was attributed to a source, weighted by citation position. It did not test Google’s AI Overviews. It supports “specific, sourced facts are more useful”, not a recipe.
The mentions finding cuts both ways. Brands mentioned a lot are usually also big and well known, a plain alternative explanation for the correlation. Build the mentions you would want without AI: real reviews, press, creators who use the product.
Not every search shows an AI answer
Overlap only matters where an AI answer appears. Samples differ widely: Semrush reported AI Overviews on about 15% of keywords in July 2025 (its Sensor data), while 43.7% of SE Ranking’s 10,000 keywords triggered one in June 2025. Neither is your category, so open the searches that matter to you and look. Our guides to Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for ecommerce and SEO versus GEO cover how they fit together.
What a Shopify store should do: build for both
Ranking helps, it is not enough, and the pages that get cited are often answering a more specific question than your head term. Here is the order I would work in.
1. Make sure your important pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. This is Google’s stated entry requirement. In Search Console, check the Page indexing report for your top collections and products. Shopify generates a sitemap automatically, according to Shopify’s help centre, so the usual problems are thin, duplicate or filtered URLs, not a missing sitemap. If key pages sit under “Crawled, currently not indexed”, start with our guide to that status.
2. Do not block the crawlers you want. Googlebot access is non-negotiable for Google. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI’s documentation recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot is a separate setting that OpenAI describes as being for training its models, so allowing search and declining training is a legitimate choice. Edit Shopify’s robots.txt carefully; the steps and risks are in our robots.txt guide.
3. Write for the follow-up questions, not only the keyword. Because answers draw on related searches, a page that stops at “buy now” gives an AI little to quote. List the questions a buyer asks before purchasing and answer them on the page in plain text: fit, ingredients, compatibility, care, delivery times, returns. A fictional example:
Illustrative example, not a client. A store sells a fictional “Aldan” burr coffee grinder. The head term is “best coffee grinder for beginners”. Related questions a buyer asks might be “burr or blade”, “what grind for a home espresso machine” and “how loud is it”. The page that answers all three in plain sentences gives both a search engine and an AI assistant something specific to use. A page that says “perfect for every home barista” gives neither.
Make the sentences specific and true: replace “quiet and powerful” with a measured noise level and a stated motor size, with the source. Never invent a number.
4. Say what is unique. Google’s guide stresses non-commodity content with a point of view, such as a first-hand review, over a summary of what is already online. For a store that means your own testing, photos, sizing notes and real customer questions, which a manufacturer’s copy cannot give.
5. Keep the data consistent. Google says structured data should match what is visible on the page and that Merchant Center and Business Profile information should be current. Shopify’s help centre says supported themes include product microdata by default, covering things like price and availability, so the common failure is a mismatch after a price or stock change, not missing markup. Our posts on schema markup for AI citations and product data for AI shopping agents explain what to check.
6. Earn mentions you would want anyway. Product reviews, creator coverage, press and honest answers in forums your buyers read. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, and for other assistants I found no evidence that manufactured mentions work. Ahrefs found YouTube the most cited domain in AI Overviews in its Brand Radar data, and Semrush found Reddit a leading citation source across the platforms it studied. Worth a look, not a reason to manufacture anything.
7. Measure, and keep it honest. Google points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. For ChatGPT visits, set up referral tracking in GA4 (see tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4). Google also says clicks from AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning people are more likely to spend longer on the site. That is Google’s statement and I have not seen independent data, so check your own conversion rate for those sessions. Google’s May 2025 Search Central post makes the same point: look at conversion indicators such as sales and sign-ups, not only clicks. Its 2026 guide also warns that no third-party tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems, so treat rank and citation trackers as samples, not facts.
Test your own overlap in an hour
You do not need to rely on someone else’s sample. Here is a small test you can run on your own category.
- List 20 searches that matter: category terms, “best X for Y” questions and pre-purchase questions.
- For each, note the Google top ten domains, whether an AI Overview appeared, and which URLs it cited. For ChatGPT or Perplexity, note the sources they list.
- Record the date, country and login status. Repeat on two other days, because answers move around (SE Ranking’s 9.2% repeat match is the warning).
- Calculate overlap both ways: by URL and by domain.
An illustrative calculation (made-up numbers, not a result): across 20 searches, 12 show an AI Overview. Those 12 cite 60 URLs on 44 distinct domains. Of the 60 URLs, 21 also rank in that search’s top ten, so URL overlap is 21 divided by 60, or 35%. Of the 44 domains, 20 also appear among the top-ten domains, so domain overlap is 20 divided by 44, or about 45%. Then the useful part: look at the 39 cited URLs that did not rank and ask what they answer that the ranking pages do not.
| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your domain is cited, but with a different page from the one that ranks | The AI matched a more specific question to another page | Read that page, strengthen it, and link to it internally |
| You rank in the top ten but competitors are cited | The cited pages may answer a related sub-question better | Compare them on the question asked; add the missing answer |
| You are cited without ranking in the top ten | Fan-out or a different retrieval path | Keep the page accurate; do not over-read one run |
| No AI answer appears | Nothing AI-specific to fix for that search | Treat it as a classic SEO question |
| Assistants name competitors you do not see in search | Sources like reviews, forums or video may be doing the work | Check where those competitors are mentioned |
Key takeaways
- Ranking on Google helps your odds of an AI Overview citation, but in the three studies that measure it, between about 17% and 43% of AI Overview citations came from top-ten pages, and for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot the figures were mostly under 15%.
- The studies disagree because they define overlap differently: URL or domain, top ten or top twenty, which tool, which searches, when and where. Check the definition before quoting a number.
- Whether overlap is rising or falling is not settled. One study’s headline drop is partly a change in how it parses results.
- A widely repeated claim that overlap collapsed could not be traced to a published method at its source, so I have not used it.
- Google says no special optimisation is needed for its AI features beyond indexed, snippet-eligible pages and sound SEO. Its guide calls generative AI optimisation still SEO.
- Evidence for “clear, structured, quotable” is mixed: documented for readers, plausible for specific sourced facts, unproven for formatting tricks.
- Build for the follow-up questions a buyer asks, keep data consistent, earn real mentions and measure your own conversion from AI-referred visits.
- Nobody can promise a citation from Google, ChatGPT or any other assistant.
FAQs
Does ranking number one on Google guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. In Conductor’s sample of U.S. searches (15 June to 15 August 2026) a page in position one was cited 24.9% of the time. In seoClarity’s sample (searches that triggered an AI Overview on 12 October 2025) it was about 43%. The samples differ, so do not compare them directly, but neither shows a guarantee.
Do I need to rank on Google to be cited by ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. In Ahrefs’ August 2025 study of 15,000 prompts, about 8% of ChatGPT’s in-text citations were in Google’s top ten for the prompt. Semrush found domains with more top-ten rankings tended to be cited more, but often with a different page. Ranking may help a domain be considered. It does not decide the page.
Is the overlap between Google rankings and AI citations getting smaller?
The evidence is mixed. Ahrefs reported a fall from about 76% to about 38% for AI Overviews between July 2025 and March 2026, while noting it improved its parsing in between. BrightEdge found its measure rose between May 2024 and September 2025. I cannot give you one direction.
Do I need schema, an llms.txt file or special formatting to be cited?
For Google’s AI features, Google says no: there is no special schema.org markup to add, and you can skip llms.txt files for Google Search. Keep structured data accurate for rich results. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. For other assistants, documentation is thin, so treat claims about them as unproven.
Does every Google search show an AI Overview?
No. Google says AI Overviews are only shown when they add something to classic Search and often do not trigger. Samples differ (about 15% of keywords for Semrush in July 2025, 43.7% for SE Ranking in June 2025), so check the searches you care about.
How do I check whether my store is being cited?
Use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console for Google, GA4 referral data for ChatGPT visits, and a dated log of prompts and the sources shown, repeated on different days. Treat any single run as a sample.
Can an agency guarantee AI citations?
No. The studies above show answers change from run to run, and Google tells site owners to be wary of tools that promise ranking success. Anyone promising a citation is promising something nobody controls.
