Google AI Mode Shopping and AI Overviews: A Shopify Store Guide

Quick answer: Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear on some regular search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search, and Google began rolling it out in Australia, in English, on 8 October 2025. Google says there is no opt-in and no special markup: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. For ecommerce, that means answer-ready collection and product pages, accurate product data, and a credible brand. Nothing is guaranteed. Facts below are as at the time of writing, October 2026.

For years, ecommerce SEO meant getting a collection page into Google’s top three. That is still valuable, but Google’s results look different now. Above the links, an AI Overview may summarise the answer. And in AI Mode, a shopper can have a full conversation with Google, comparing products and narrowing down options before they see a list of stores.

This guide covers how Google’s AI features handle shopping searches, what Google itself says about being included, what has changed for Australian stores, and ten practical changes for Shopify brands. If you want the wider picture on AI Overviews, start with The 2026 State of AI Overviews for Shopify. This guide focuses on AI Mode shopping and the product data behind it.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode: what is the difference?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some regular Google results, with links to sources. You do not turn them on. Google’s documentation says they appear when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often do not trigger.

AI Mode is a separate search experience where you ask longer questions and follow-ups. Google says it is particularly helpful for queries that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons (Google Search Central).

Google announced the AI Mode rollout in Australia on 8 October 2025, in English (Google Australia blog).

For shopping, Google describes AI Mode as combining Gemini with its Shopping Graph, its product data (Google). Merchants can share product data with Google through Google Merchant Center, a free tool you control in your own Google account.

How Google’s AI handles shopping searches

When someone asks Google’s AI a shopping question, such as “best lightweight sunscreen for oily skin under $40”, Google’s documentation says AI features may use a technique called “query fan-out”. That means running several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response (Google Search Central).

In practice, one question is split into sub-questions: skin type, texture, SPF, price. Pages and product data that match those sub-questions are retrieved, and an answer is written with links, and in AI Mode, products.

What this means for you: ranking for one big keyword is not enough. Your pages should answer the specific sub-questions shoppers have, such as skin type, price, ingredients, size, use case and delivery, and your product data should be complete enough to match them.

What has changed for Australian stores

  • AI Mode is available in Australia, in English. Google announced the rollout on 8 October 2025, and its Google Ads Help page now lists Australia among the countries where ads appear within AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • AI Overviews show up widely. In our October 2026 check of the searches behind our AI SEO page, Google showed an AI Overview on nearly every result in Australia and the United States (Semrush). That check covers AI SEO searches, not shopping searches. How often AI Overviews appear for your category is something to check for yourself.
  • Ads in AI answers are live in Australia. Google Ads Help lists Australia for ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode, and says text ads and Shopping ads can appear there (Google Ads Help). On 28 October 2026 Google said it is scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia (Google). Ads are separate from organic visibility. This guide is about organic.
  • AI checkout is arriving in stages. See the section on the Universal Commerce Protocol below. Check your own Merchant Center account before planning around it.

What helps your pages be used as sources

Google does not publish a formula. Its guidance says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI features. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and there are no additional requirements. It also says there is no special schema.org markup you need to add (Google Search Central).

Beyond that, this is our advice for making a page the clearest answer available:

  1. Be indexable and snippet-eligible. This is Google’s only stated requirement. If you use nosnippet or noindex controls on a page, Google may not show it.
  2. Answer the exact question near the top. One or two sentences that fully answer it, before the detail.
  3. Include specifics. Ingredients, sizes, SPF ratings, comparisons, who it suits and who it does not.
  4. Keep structured data accurate. Markup should match what is visible on the page. For product pages, that means clean Product and Offer markup. See our guide to schema markup and AI answers.
  5. Be a credible brand. Reviews, press mentions and consistent information across the web.
  6. Stay current. Up-to-date prices, stock and visible “last updated” dates.

Important: you cannot opt in to AI Overviews, and you cannot make Google cite you. You can only make your pages the clearest, most trustworthy answer you can.

How products get shown in AI Mode

For shopping, AI Mode draws on Google’s product data as well as web pages. Google’s own advice is to keep your Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. To give your products the best chance of matching:

  • Keep Google Merchant Center accurate. Titles, descriptions, prices, availability, GTINs, images, shipping and returns. Your feed is no longer only for Shopping ads. It is product data Google can use.
  • Use the Google & YouTube app on Shopify (or another feed tool) to sync products, and check for disapprovals and warnings regularly. Google recommends automatic sync (Google Merchant Center Help).
  • Fill in product attributes: colour, size, material, age group, gender and product type, where relevant.
  • Show genuine reviews on product pages.
  • Make product pages answer comparison questions, such as how this product differs from your other ones.

Shipping and returns

Australian shoppers want delivery times and return terms before they buy. Share them in Merchant Center and on a clear policy page. If you also add structured data, note how Google handles it:

  • Google recommends a standard return policy for most or all products at the organisation level (hasMerchantReturnPolicy nested under Organization), with product-level versions only to override it (Google Search Central).
  • Shipping works the same way. A standard policy sits at the organisation level, and product-level shippingDetails on the Offer is for exceptions (Google Search Central).
  • If you set the same details in Merchant Center or Search Console, Google says those settings take precedence over your markup.

Ask your developer which of these your store already outputs before adding anything.

Google’s agentic checkout and the Universal Commerce Protocol

Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) on 11 January 2026, around the National Retail Federation conference. It is an open standard for agentic commerce. Google says Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart co-developed it, and more than 20 others, including Visa, Mastercard and Stripe, endorsed it (Google).

At announcement, UCP powered a checkout button on eligible product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app for eligible US retailers, paid with Google Pay, with the retailer remaining the seller of record. Google also announced two other items: Business Agent, a branded chat agent for retailers in Search (launched with US retailers), and Direct Offers, a Google Ads pilot for showing offers in AI Mode.

For Australia, Google’s position has moved in stages. In May 2026 it said UCP-powered checkout would roll out across Canada and Australia “in the coming months” (Google). Merchant Center Help says the checkout feature applies to products with eligibility in the United States, Canada and Australia, for select merchants at this time (Google Merchant Center Help). In September 2026 Google said newer UCP capabilities were rolling out in the US first, with Australia and Canada to follow early next year (Google).

For Shopify merchants, Shopify’s help documentation says AI Mode and Gemini can reach your products through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Merchant Center. Availability of checkout varies by store and region, so check your Shopify admin. We cover the Shopify side in Shopify Agentic Storefronts.

What to do now if you are an Australian store: nothing that costs money. Focus on clean product data, complete store policies and strong product pages. Those are the basics for any AI shopping channel.

10 changes Shopify stores should make

1. Rewrite your top collection pages to answer questions

Add a short, direct answer at the top (“Our lightest SPF 50 sunscreens for oily skin are…”), then buying guidance and FAQs below the product grid. See Shopify collection page SEO.

2. Cover the sub-questions

For each main category, list the sub-questions: skin type, budget, size, ingredient, occasion, delivery. Make sure each one is answered somewhere, on a collection page, a product page or a guide.

3. Put facts in text, not images

Ingredient lists, size charts and comparison tables should be real text, not only images.

4. Fix your structured data

One clean Product block per product page, with price, priceCurrency (AUD), availability, brand, GTIN where available, and genuine review data. Remove duplicates added by apps. Test with Google’s Rich Results Test. Google ended FAQ rich results in 2026, so do not add FAQ markup in the hope of one. Our product page SEO checklist covers the product page side.

5. Check your Merchant Center feed

Fix disapprovals, add GTINs, write descriptive titles and keep prices and stock in sync with Shopify. This is work in your own Google account.

6. Make shipping and returns easy to find

In Merchant Center, on a clear policy page and on product pages. Include delivery times by region.

7. Publish comparison and “best for” content

“Mineral vs chemical sunscreen”, “best serum for sensitive skin”. These are the kinds of questions AI answers handle. Write honest comparisons, including where a competitor is stronger.

8. Build brand mentions

Get into category roundups, gift guides, reviews and press. AI answers can draw on what the wider web says about you.

9. Keep content fresh

Update prices, product details and “last updated” dates, and review your key guides regularly.

10. Track AI visibility monthly

Run a fixed set of shopping questions in Google (watching for AI Overviews) and in AI Mode, and record who is cited and shown. For the ChatGPT side, see how to rank in ChatGPT.

How to measure the impact

MetricWhere to find it
Clicks and impressionsGoogle Search Console. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the Performance report under the “Web” search type, not reported separately
Ads in AI answersGoogle Ads. Performance is included in aggregate in your standard campaign reports
AI Overview appearances and brand mentionsAI visibility tools such as Semrush, plus manual checks
Organic revenueGA4 and Shopify Analytics

Because Search Console does not separate AI features, judge success on organic revenue and conversions for the pages involved, not clicks alone.

Real example: AI Overview placements and mentions

Alongside our work, a Premium AU Reef-Safe Sunscreen Brand had six Google AI Overview placements confirmed between August and September 2026 (screenshots). In September 2026 it was the most-cited source in the Australian AI-search data for the category, 16 mentions against 10 for the next site (Semrush, Australia). Its AI brand mentions in Australia rose from 13 on 1 August to 22 (+69%) between August and September 2026 (Semrush).

Over July to September 2026, its Google clicks went from 522 to 1.06K (+103%), comparing 1 to 31 July with 1 to 30 September in Search Console. Separately, the search “sunscreen pregnant safe” moved from #42 in July to #4 in August (search-result checks).

Alongside our work, a Premium AU Skincare Brand had Google AI Overviews for three searches in September 2026, with one product named as the first recommendation for one target search (screenshots).

These are results for two stores over specific periods. They are not a promise of the same result. You can read the full case studies for the reef-safe sunscreen brand and the skincare brand.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews appear on some regular Google results; AI Mode is a separate conversational search. Google announced the AI Mode rollout in Australia on 8 October 2025.
  • Google’s AI breaks shopping questions into sub-questions, so your pages need to answer the specifics shoppers care about.
  • Google says there is no opt-in and no special markup. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  • Product data matters: Merchant Center, structured data, shipping and returns, GTINs and reviews.
  • Google’s AI checkout, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol, is rolling out in stages. Check your Merchant Center account for eligibility.
  • Measure organic revenue and AI visibility, not clicks alone.

FAQs

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google Search where you can ask complex questions and follow-ups, and get AI-written answers with links and, for shopping, product suggestions. It is separate from AI Overviews, which appear above some regular results.

Is Google AI Mode available in Australia?

Yes, in English. Google announced the rollout to Australians on 8 October 2025. Some features, such as checkout inside AI Mode, depend on country and merchant eligibility and are rolling out in stages.

How do I get my store into Google AI Overviews?

You cannot opt in. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that no special markup is needed. In practice: answer the question in the first sentences, include specific facts, keep structured data accurate and current, and build brand mentions. Nothing is guaranteed.

Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to ecommerce sites?

Nobody outside Google can give a store-wide answer, so check your own data. Google counts AI feature traffic in the Web search type in Search Console, and describes clicks from pages with AI Overviews as higher quality. Judge the impact on organic revenue and conversions, not clicks alone.

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for agentic commerce, announced by Google in January 2026. Google says Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart co-developed it. It powers a checkout feature on eligible product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, which began with eligible US retailers.

Does Google Merchant Center matter for AI Mode?

It helps. Google describes its Shopping Graph as the product data behind AI Mode shopping, and Merchant Center is one way merchants share product data with Google. Google’s own advice is to keep your Merchant Center information up to date. Accurate titles, prices, availability, GTINs, images, shipping and returns make your products easier to match.

Can Shopify stores appear in Google AI Mode shopping results?

Yes, if Google has accurate product data for them and their pages are relevant. Syncing products to Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube app and keeping the data complete both help. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts add a route for some stores, subject to availability.

Are there ads in Google AI Mode in Australia?

Google Ads Help lists Australia among the countries where text ads and Shopping ads can appear within AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google said on 28 October 2026 that it is scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia. Check the Google Ads Help page for the current list.

Google’s AI answers are already shaping what Australian shoppers see. The pages and brands that get used as sources are the ones with clear answers, accurate data and a credible reputation.
