Shopify Agentic Storefronts: What They Are, Who Can Use Them and How to Prepare
What Shopify Agentic Storefronts are, which AI channels they reach, who is eligible (including Australian stores) and how to get your products AI-ready.
Quick answer: Shopify Agentic Storefronts is a feature in your Shopify admin (Sales channels > Agentic) that shares your product data, through Shopify Catalog, with AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini, so shoppers can find your products, and on some channels buy them, inside an AI conversation. Shopify’s help pages say it is active by default for eligible stores, and Shopify decides eligibility. Several channels require you to sell to US customers, so check your admin to see what is open to your store. Product data quality and AI SEO decide how often you are shown.
Shoppers have started asking AI assistants what to buy, and getting an answer with products and prices in the same chat. Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter ‘26 Edition, in December 2025, as its way of putting merchants’ products into those conversations.
This guide covers what it is, whether your store can use it (including what Australian stores can check today, because several channels are tied to US customers), and what to fix so the AI has good information to work with. Everything about Shopify and AI platforms below was checked against their own pages at the time of writing, October 2026. This area changes quickly, so treat your Shopify admin as the final word.
What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts connects your product catalogue to AI channels, so your products can be discovered, and on some channels bought, inside AI chats. Instead of a shopper leaving the chat, searching Google and landing on your store, the AI shows your product as part of its answer.
“Agentic” refers to AI agents: software that can act on a person’s behalf, such as comparing options or completing a purchase.
Shopify’s Winter ‘26 announcement, published on 10 December 2025, describes a one-time setup in your admin, with the option to switch AI platforms on or off individually. It named ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as examples, with others coming soon. Shopify has since pointed readers of that post to newer updates, and the channel list has moved on (see the table below).
Four Shopify terms come up often:
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| Agentic Storefronts | The admin feature that connects your store to participating AI channels. You manage it under Sales channels > Agentic |
| Shopify Catalog | Shopify’s structured source of product information. Shopify’s help says eligible products are included automatically, and that inclusion does not guarantee you appear in any particular AI answer |
| Shopify Agentic plan | A plan for businesses that do not use a Shopify online store as their storefront. It needs an external product URL on each product, pointing to the listing on the store you already run. If your store is built on Shopify, you do not need it |
| Knowledge base | The page in the same admin section where you review the non-product facts AI agents use about your store (covered below) |
How Agentic Storefronts work, step by step
- Your product data goes into Shopify Catalog. Shopify lists the details it considers: title, description, images, product type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes (such as GTIN, UPC or ISBN) and variants including option names.
- Shopify shares that data with participating AI channels. You do not build a separate feed for each one. From the Agentic page you control which channels can access your products.
- A shopper asks a question in an AI chat, for example “best reef-safe sunscreen for kids”, and the AI suggests products.
- The shopper buys, in one of two ways. On ChatGPT, Shopify’s help says shoppers are sent to your own online store checkout. On channels with direct checkout, such as Microsoft Copilot, shoppers can buy inside the chat if direct checkout is active and available. If it is off or unavailable, they are redirected to your store instead.
On protocols: the Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard that Stripe describes as co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI (September 2025). Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol on 11 January 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Shopify’s Spring ‘26 post says Catalog and the Universal Commerce Protocol are both enabled by default for Shopify merchants.
Which AI platforms are included?
At the time of writing (October 2026), this is what Shopify’s own help pages say for each channel:
| Channel | What Shopify’s page says | Country wording on the page |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | A discovery channel, active by default for eligible stores. Shoppers check out on your online store | Your store must sell to customers in the United States; it can be based elsewhere |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify-powered direct checkout, activated by default for eligible stores | Your store must sell to US customers; direct checkout shows only to customers based in the US |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout is rolling out and “might not yet be available in your store”. Needs products in Google Merchant Center | You must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia |
| Meta | Direct checkout, on by default for eligible stores | You must sell to customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan or Singapore |
| Perplexity | Named in Shopify’s December 2025 announcement. Not listed on Shopify’s current Agentic Storefronts help pages | Not stated. Check your admin |
Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms (last updated 6 October 2026) say eligible merchants can see the current list of participating channels in their admin, and that Shopify may add more over time. That list is the only reliable source for your store.
Who is eligible, and can Australian stores use it?
Eligibility is set by Shopify, store by store. The Supplemental Terms say Shopify may determine, in its sole discretion, whether your store is eligible. Shopify’s channel help pages list the common requirements:
- Agree to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms. Some channels add their own terms.
- Complete store policies. Terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy must be completed in Settings > Policies.
- Products eligible for Shopify Catalog. B2B-only products are not supported. ChatGPT does not show products covered by OpenAI’s prohibited list, and Google’s direct checkout does not support subscription-only products, bundles or customisable products.
- Selling to the countries the channel names. See the table above.
What this means for Australian Shopify stores
Read the country wording channel by channel:
- ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot: Shopify’s pages say your store must sell to customers in the United States. If you sell only within Australia, those two channels are not open to you on Shopify’s wording.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini: Shopify’s page names Australia, and says direct checkout is rolling out gradually and might not yet be available in your store. It also needs your products in Google Merchant Center.
- Anything else: if Shopify’s pages do not state your country, check your admin rather than assuming.
To see where your own store stands, open Sales channels > Agentic. Shopify says that page shows your product count in Shopify Catalog, which channels are available, and why your store might not be eligible.
An open Shopify channel is not a precondition for being recommended by an AI assistant. Assistants can name stores in their answers whether or not a channel is open to you, and that depends on clear product information, structured data and a brand the wider web describes consistently.
Alongside our work, a Premium AU Skincare Brand’s ChatGPT referral users rose from 10 to 23 a month (July to September 2026, Google Analytics). Also alongside our work, over the same period its AI search visibility in Australia rose from 24 to 30 (Semrush), and one of its products was named as the first recommendation in a Google AI Overview for one of its target searches (September 2026 screenshots). This is one store over one period, alongside other activity, and it is not a promise of the same result. You can read the full case study.
If you sell into the US from Australia, for example through Shopify Markets, ChatGPT’s page says a store based outside the US can qualify if it sells to US customers. Treat it as a test channel at first, and keep the Australian customer experience as your priority.
How to check and manage your setup
Shopify’s help says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. The setting behind that is Allow Shopify to manage for me, which is on by default: all channels are active, Catalog access is on, direct checkout is activated for relevant channels, and you are enrolled in new channels automatically. If you turn it off, you manage Catalog access, auto-enrolment, direct checkout and individual channels yourself.
Before you rely on it:
- Open Sales channels > Agentic and see which channels apply to your store and whether it is eligible.
- Complete Settings > Policies: terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are required for channel eligibility. A shipping policy also counts toward Shopify’s listing quality checks.
- Decide whether to leave “Allow Shopify to manage for me” on. On means new channels and direct checkout switch on for you. Off means you approve each one.
- Decide which products you do not want shown. Shopify says the Unlisted status or the
seo.hiddenmetafield hides a product from all agentic storefronts and from search engines, so use them carefully. - Watch the first orders. Check that AI-channel orders and the Agentic reports match what you see in your admin.
If you want to opt out of a channel, Shopify’s ChatGPT page says to turn off Shopify Catalog access for it. Data sharing can take up to 7 days to stop, and products may still appear through web crawling.
Shopify’s Knowledge base: the facts AI agents use about your store
Shopify’s standalone Knowledge Base app can no longer be installed and will not be available after 15 January 2027. Its replacement is the Knowledge base at Sales channels > Agentic > Sources > Knowledge Base. Shopify’s 26 October 2026 changelog says stores with under 1,000 facts in the app had them moved over and published automatically, stores with more than 1,000 must add the ones they want to keep before 15 January 2027 (Shopify has emailed them), and stores that never used the app need do nothing.
What it holds. Shopify’s help describes it as the source of truth for non-product information such as returns, shipping timelines and brand values. AI agents query it through Shopify’s Storefront MCP. Categories include About the store, Brand and identity, Company policies (missing policies are flagged), Contact, Payment, Returns and warranty, Fulfilment and Additional facts. You need to be the store owner or have the Agentic permission under App and sales channel.
How to use it:
- Read each fact against reality: shipping destinations and times, return rules, payment methods, what you sell.
- Approve or reject Suggested updates. Shopify scans your storefront regularly and never changes anything without your approval. Choose Approve & publish, or reject with the thumbs-down icon, pick a reason, submit and save.
- Fix the source, then the fact. Each field shows whether it comes from a scan, your Shopify admin or a manual entry. Update a policy in your admin, or change the field’s source to Manual to write your own text. Scans do not always pick up storefront changes, so add important facts directly. Request rescan can take up to 48 hours.
- Add Additional facts. Choose Add fact, give it a descriptive title and pick one type: paragraph, yes/no or tags. Write the answer in the first sentence and use specific numbers, for example (illustrative): “Yes, we ship Australia-wide, including WA and the NT. Delivery to Perth takes 3 to 6 business days.”
- Publish only what you have checked. Facts from a scan stay unpublished until you publish them, and facts linked to your admin, such as policies and contact details, publish when created. The Knowledge base holds up to 1,000 facts, and on a password-protected store it can only show data from your admin.
Review it whenever shipping, returns, payment options or your range change. Nothing on the Shopify pages we checked says it changes how often your store is shown. It affects what agents can say about you once you are shown.
What Shopify says about which products get shown
No AI company publishes its full ranking rules, and they change often. Shopify’s own pages do give some signals. On the Agentic page, the Listing quality and Listing insights views break each listing down into:
- Description completeness: word count, which Shopify says affects matching to natural-language queries
- Image coverage: the number of images
- Product reviews: ratings and review count, counting only verified reviews
- Variant and option completeness: variants, options and stock
- Shop policy completeness: whether shipping, returns, refund and other policies are present
Shopify also offers a search preview of how products might rank for a query, and calls it a directional signal, not an exact prediction, because storefronts often re-rank results. Assistants also draw on the wider web, so consistent prices and brand details across your listings help, as do reviews and mentions from others. None of this guarantees a recommendation.
A 12-point checklist for AI-ready product pages
Work through this on your top-selling products first.
| # | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Product titles name the product type and key attribute (“Reef-Safe Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, 100 ml”), not just a brand name | Titles are a listed product detail and are matched to questions |
| 2 | Descriptions open with a one-sentence summary: what it is, who it is for, the main benefit | That sentence is easy to quote |
| 3 | Ingredients, materials, sizes and use cases are written in text, not only in images | Text is easier for machines to read than text inside images |
| 4 | Product type, vendor, collections and tags are filled in consistently | Shopify lists them as product organisation details |
| 5 | Barcodes (GTINs) are added where your products have them | Helps identify the exact product |
| 6 | Variant option names are clear (“Size: 50 ml / 100 ml”, not “Option 1”) | Variants and option names are a listed detail |
| 7 | Images are clear and varied: product on white, in use, scale, packaging | Images are a listed detail and part of listing quality |
| 8 | Store policies are complete: returns, shipping, privacy, terms | Required for eligibility; agents answer policy questions from them |
| 9 | Product structured data is valid: one Product block with price, currency and availability | Machines can read price and stock without guessing |
| 10 | If you want Google AI Mode and Gemini, your products are in Google Merchant Center and match your store | Shopify’s Google channel page requires it |
| 11 | Your Knowledge base facts are reviewed and published | You can correct what agents are told about your store |
| 12 | Genuine, verified reviews are on product pages and in your structured data | Shopify counts only verified reviews in listing quality |

Agentic Storefronts vs AI SEO: why you need both
These two things are easy to confuse.
| Agentic Storefronts | AI SEO (GEO) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A Shopify feature that sends your catalogue to AI channels | Optimising your store and brand so AI tools find, trust and cite you |
| Who controls it | Shopify and the participating platforms | You, through your pages, data and reputation |
| Availability | Depends on eligibility, channel and country | Not tied to a Shopify channel |
| What it affects | Whether your products can be found, and on some channels bought, inside the AI | Whether the AI chooses to mention you at all |
Agentic Storefronts can put your products on the shelf. AI SEO is about whether the AI picks you off it. A store with channels switched on but thin product pages and no reputation may rarely be recommended. That is why our AI SEO services focus on the parts you control: answer-ready product and collection pages, correct structured data and consistent brand information. How to measure sales and visibility from AI
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Track three things:
- Orders and sessions from AI channels. Shopify’s Agentic page reports sales, orders, online store sessions and online store conversion for each channel, with a default range of the last 30 days and a total sales report across all AI channels. Sales combine referral-based sales and direct checkout sales. The reports are not available for headless stores.
- Visits referred by AI tools. In Google Analytics 4, look at traffic sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. OpenAI has said ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto referral links from its search results, which makes those visits easier to spot, but not every visit may carry the tag. Shopify’s Google channel page also says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in direct checkout, so use Shopify’s own reports for those sales. - How often you are named. Each month, ask the same set of buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (watching for AI Overviews), and record which brands are named. AI visibility tools can help, but check by hand too.
Common mistakes
- Assuming it is on and working. Check your admin, your policies and your first orders.
- Leaving policies half-written. They are a requirement, and an agent that cannot find your return policy may answer wrongly.
- Writing descriptions only for people who have already decided. AI needs facts: what it is, who it is for and how it compares.
- Mismatched prices and stock across channels. Keep Shopify, Merchant Center and marketplaces in sync.
- Using Unlisted or
seo.hiddenwithout thinking. Shopify says both also hide a product from search engines. - Not measuring. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether AI channels are selling for you.
Key takeaways
- Shopify Agentic Storefronts shares your catalogue, through Shopify Catalog, with AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini. You manage it under Sales channels > Agentic.
- Shopify decides eligibility store by store. ChatGPT and Copilot require you to sell to US customers, Google AI Mode and Gemini names the United States, Canada and Australia, and rollout is gradual. Check your admin.
- Complete store policies are required, and the Knowledge base replaces the old Knowledge Base app, which is not available after 15 January 2027.
- Agentic Storefronts makes your products available to AI channels. AI SEO works on whether AI mentions you. If you are starting from scratch, our Shopify SEO service covers the foundations.
FAQs
What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts is a feature that connects your product catalogue to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini, so shoppers can discover your products in an AI conversation, and on some channels buy them there. You manage it under Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.
Is Shopify Agentic Storefronts available in Australia?
It depends on the channel and your store. Shopify’s pages say ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot require your store to sell to customers in the United States. Google AI Mode and Gemini names Australia, but direct checkout is rolling out gradually and might not yet be available in your store. Check the Agentic page in your admin for what applies to you.
Do I need to pay for Agentic Storefronts?
Shopify’s help pages for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini say there are no extra fees beyond standard payment processing. The Supplemental Terms say Shopify may charge a fee on transactions from some channels, with any fees set out in your admin. Check your admin before you turn channels on.
How do I get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?
Check that your store is eligible and that ChatGPT appears under Sales channels > Agentic. Shopify says it is active by default for eligible stores. Then improve your product data: specific titles, factual descriptions, complete attributes, barcodes, clear variants, valid structured data and complete store policies. Reviews and brand mentions also help.
Does Agentic Storefronts include Perplexity?
Perplexity was named in Shopify’s December 2025 announcement, but it is not listed on Shopify’s current Agentic Storefronts help pages. Check the channels shown in your admin rather than assuming.
What is the difference between Agentic Storefronts and AI SEO?
Agentic Storefronts is a Shopify feature that makes your products available to AI channels. AI SEO is the work of making your store and brand easy for AI tools to find, trust and cite. The first affects what the AI can see and sell. The second affects how often it mentions you.
Will Agentic Storefronts hurt my website traffic?
Some shoppers may buy without visiting your site, so sessions may not grow at the same rate as sales. Shopify’s Agentic reports show sales, orders and online store sessions per channel, so you can look at the full picture rather than sessions alone.
Can I choose which products appear in AI channels?
Partly. You can turn Shopify Catalog access on or off for individual channels, and Shopify says the Unlisted status or the seo.hidden metafield hides a product from all agentic storefronts and from search engines. Shopify also says you cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog entirely. Check the Agentic page in your admin for your options.
