How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Guide for Shopify Brands (2026)

Quick answer: To rank in ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can access your site, then publish clear, factual pages that directly answer the questions buyers ask. Add correct structured data, keep brand and product facts consistent across the web, and earn mentions on credible sites. Then track how often ChatGPT names you, and refine. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

“Ranking in ChatGPT” doesn’t work like ranking on Google. There is no page one and no ten blue links. ChatGPT writes one answer, and that answer names a handful of brands, products or sources. Either you are in it or you are not.

For Shopify brands, that answer is increasingly where buying decisions start. A shopper asks “best vitamin C serum for sensitive skin in Australia” or “is this sunscreen safe during pregnancy?”, and the brands ChatGPT names get the click, or the sale.

This guide explains how ChatGPT finds sources, what you can control, and 10 practical steps for a Shopify store. It ends with three examples of what results have looked like for stores we work with, so you can see what is realistic.

What does “ranking in ChatGPT” mean?

Ranking in ChatGPT means being named, quoted or linked in ChatGPT’s answers when people ask questions related to your business. There are three ways that happens:

TypeWhat it looks likeExample
CitationChatGPT links to your page as a source”According to yourstore.com.au…” with a link
MentionChatGPT names your brand or product in its answer”Good options include Brand A, Brand B and Brand C”
Product resultChatGPT shows your product with an image, price and linkA product card in a shopping-style answer

This is often called ChatGPT SEO or LLM SEO. If you want the definitions of those terms, and how they relate to AI SEO and GEO, read What Is AI SEO?. This post stays on the practical question: what do you do to get named.

How ChatGPT finds and chooses sources

ChatGPT answers from two places:

  1. What it learned in training. The model learned from a large body of text up to its training cut-off. This shapes what it “knows” about brands and categories.
  2. What it searches for live. When a question needs current information, ChatGPT can run a web search, read the results and build its answer from them. Questions about what to buy are the kind where this can happen.

For a Shopify brand, the live search side is where you have the most control.

OpenAI’s crawlers

OpenAI uses separate crawlers, and each one is controlled by its own robots.txt rule. OpenAI’s documentation says each setting is independent of the others. Here is what OpenAI says each one does:

CrawlerWhat OpenAI says it doesWhat to do
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational linksAllow it if you want to appear
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. It does not control search appearanceYour choice
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user’s action in ChatGPT needs it. Not used to crawl the web automatically, and robots.txt rules may not applyCannot be relied on to control

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust. For the full robots.txt picture on Shopify, including the code to allow or block each crawler, see our guide to Shopify robots.txt.

Check your store now. Open yourstore.com.au/robots.txt and look for any rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot. Shopify’s help page lists the default rules (for example, it stops crawlers fetching sorted and filtered collection URLs) and does not list any AI crawler among them. But custom edits, apps or security tools can add blocks, and Shopify says the default file can be customised, so check what your store actually serves rather than assuming.

How sources get chosen

OpenAI doesn’t publish how ChatGPT picks sources, so nobody outside OpenAI can give you the formula. What follows is practical guidance, not a list of confirmed ranking factors. Pages worth building are ones that:

  • Answer the exact question directly, near the top of the page
  • Contain specifics: numbers, ingredients, sizes, comparisons, steps
  • Are mentioned and trusted elsewhere, such as review sites, publications, forums and roundups
  • Are easy for machines to read, with clean HTML, clear headings and correct structured data
  • Are current, with up-to-date prices, stock and dates

Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

ChatGPT SEO builds on Google SEO, but the target is different. Google ranks pages. ChatGPT builds one answer and chooses which facts, brands and sources go into it.

Google SEOChatGPT SEO
GoalRank a page in the resultsBe named or cited in the answer
CrawlerGooglebotOAI-SearchBot
MeasurementRankings, clicks (Search Console)Mentions, citations, referral visits

Most of the work overlaps. A store with strong Shopify SEO, meaning clear collection pages, good product data and authority, has a head start. That is why on our own service AI SEO is only sold together with SEO: both use the same pages and the same data. For the longer comparison, see SEO vs GEO: the real difference.

10 steps to rank in ChatGPT

These steps start with access and finish with measurement. The order is a sensible way to work, not a ranking of impact.

Step 1: Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your store

Check robots.txt for blocks on OAI-SearchBot. Also check that security tools and bot-protection settings are not blocking it. If ChatGPT’s search crawler cannot read your pages, the other steps cannot help.

Step 2: Write down the questions your buyers ask

List 20 to 30 questions a buyer asks before purchasing in your category. Use your support inbox, product reviews, Google’s “People also ask” and Reddit. Group them into types:

  • Best for a need: “best reef-safe sunscreen for kids”
  • Comparison: “mineral vs chemical sunscreen”
  • Suitability: “is this safe during pregnancy?”
  • Brand questions: “is [your brand] any good?”
  • Where to buy: “where can I buy reef-safe sunscreen in Australia?”

These become your tracking set and your content plan.

Step 3: Answer each question clearly on the right page

Put the answer where it belongs:

  • “Best for” questions go on collection pages, with a short answer at the top
  • Product-specific questions go on product pages and product FAQs
  • Comparisons and how-tos go in blog posts and guides

Start each answer with one or two sentences that fully answer the question, then add the detail. A clear first sentence is the easiest part of a page for any reader, human or machine, to quote.

Step 4: Make product information specific

ChatGPT cannot recommend what it cannot understand. On product pages, state in plain text:

  • What the product is and who it is for
  • Key ingredients or materials, sizes and variants
  • What makes it different from alternatives
  • Price, availability and delivery information

Avoid hiding key facts in images, or in tabs that load only on click.

Step 5: Add and fix structured data

Structured data labels the parts of a page for machines. OpenAI does not say that ChatGPT reads it, so treat it as good hygiene rather than a ChatGPT switch. It keeps your product facts unambiguous for Google and for other systems that do read it. For Shopify stores, the essentials are:

  • Product and Offer (price, currency, availability)
  • AggregateRating and Review, from genuine reviews only
  • Organization on your homepage, with logo and social profiles

Test your pages with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Duplicate Product blocks from your theme and apps are a common problem on Shopify. FAQ sections are still useful to shoppers, but Google has ended FAQ rich results, so you do not need FAQPage markup for them. For the markup that matters, see Schema Markup and AI Answers: What It Does and Does Not Do.

Step 6: Keep your brand facts consistent everywhere

Your brand name, what you sell, where you are based, your founding story and key product facts should match across your website, social profiles, Google Business Profile, marketplaces, stockists and press. Inconsistent details can make it harder for any system, human or machine, to be sure who you are.

Step 7: Earn mentions on sites that carry weight

OpenAI doesn’t say how it weighs what other sites say about you. It is still reasonable to expect that being named on credible sites in your category helps, and it also helps with Google. The mentions worth chasing are:

  • Category roundups (“best reef-safe sunscreens in Australia”)
  • Review and comparison sites in your niche
  • Press and industry publications
  • Genuine discussion on forums and Reddit (never fake posts)
  • Stockist and partner pages

This is classic digital PR, aimed at the sources AI tools may read.

Step 8: Publish content with original information

Content that adds something new, such as your own data, tests, comparisons or expert explanations, gives an AI tool a reason to use your page rather than a generic one. Researchers published a paper on this idea in 2023 (“GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735). They introduced generative engine optimisation as a framework, built a benchmark to test it, and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses in their experiments, with the best strategies varying by domain. That was a research setting, not your store, so use it as a reason to experiment, not as a promise.

For a Shopify brand, original information can be simple. Example ideas: a white-cast test of SPF 50 sunscreens on three skin tones, or a summary of what 300 customer reviews say about sensitive skin.

Step 9: Keep pages fresh

Update prices, stock, product details and “last updated” dates. Out-of-date information gives any reader a reason to trust another source.

Step 10: Track, then improve

Run your question set in ChatGPT every month and record who gets named. Fix the gaps: missing pages, unclear answers, competitors with more mentions. Then repeat. The next section shows how.

How ChatGPT recommends products

When a question has buying intent, ChatGPT can show product results: product cards with images, prices and links to buy. How those results are chosen is set by OpenAI and can change, so check OpenAI’s current help pages rather than relying on a blog post, including this one.

For Shopify brands there is also a more direct route. Shopify says Agentic Storefronts let merchants sell inside AI chats, and that the feature is enabled automatically for eligible stores. Availability depends on your store and where you sell, so check your admin. We cover it in Shopify Agentic Storefronts: how to sell inside ChatGPT. One point worth knowing from Shopify: blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt does not stop Shopify Catalog sending product data to agentic storefronts you have activated. Those settings are managed separately.

Either way, the same product data matters: specific titles, factual descriptions, complete attributes, barcodes (GTINs), clear variants, accurate prices and stock, and genuine reviews.

How to measure your ChatGPT visibility

1. Manual prompt tracking (the most reliable place to start)

Each month, run the same 20 to 30 buyer questions in ChatGPT. Use a fresh chat each time and, ideally, a logged-out or clean session to reduce personalisation. Record:

  • Were you named? In what position?
  • Which competitors were named?
  • Which pages or sites were cited?
  • Was anything said about you that is wrong?

2. Referral traffic in GA4

Many links shown in ChatGPT carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, though tagging is not guaranteed on every visit, so treat the number as a minimum. In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, then filter on a session source containing “chatgpt”. Track sessions, conversions and revenue. Check your own reports before you rely on the tag, because tracking setups differ.

3. AI visibility tools

Tools such as Semrush report AI visibility and mentions. They are useful for trends, but treat the numbers as estimates and combine them with manual checks.

4. Shopify’s Knowledge base

Shopify’s standalone Knowledge Base app is being retired and replaced by a Knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. Check what reporting it offers on your store before relying on it.

A simple tracking sheet

Use a spreadsheet with one row per question, per month. Example row (illustrative):

ColumnExample
Question and type”Best reef-safe sunscreen for kids in Australia” (best for a need)
Date checked1 Nov 2026
Were you named, and where?Yes, 2nd of 4 brands
Your page cited?Yes: /collections/kids-sunscreen
Competitors and sourcesBrand X, Brand Y; Review site A
Anything wrong about you?”Says you don’t ship to WA” (you do)
ActionUpdate the shipping FAQ

Tips for cleaner results:

  • Use a fresh chat for every question, so earlier questions don’t shape the answer.
  • Ask the question exactly the same way each month.
  • Run each question twice. AI answers vary, so note whether you appear in both.
  • Check the cited sources. If the same review site keeps appearing, getting featured there may be worth more than another blog post.

What results look like: real data

These are results from three stores we work with, over different periods. Each came alongside our work and other things happening in the business, so read them as examples, not promises.

Premium AU Skincare Brand

  • Alongside our work, AI search visibility in Australia rose from 24 to 30 (Semrush, July to September 2026).
  • Alongside our work, ChatGPT referral users rose from 10 a month in July to 23 a month in September 2026 (Google Analytics 4). Read the case study.

Premium AU Reef-Safe Sunscreen Brand

  • Alongside our work, brand mentions in Australian AI search rose from 13 to 22 (Semrush, August to September 2026).
  • In September 2026 its site was the most-cited source in Semrush’s Australian AI-search data for its category, with 16 mentions against 10 for the next site, again alongside our work. Read the case study.

Lhasa Remedy, a US wellness brand

  • Alongside our work, five Google AI Overview citations in June 2026.
  • Alongside our work, 68 cited pages across AI platforms in August 2026, 54 of them in ChatGPT (Semrush).

These are three stores, one period each. They are not a promise that your store will get the same.

Ranking in ChatGPT as an Australian brand

ChatGPT’s answers can change with the location and wording of a question. “Best sunscreen for kids” and “best sunscreen for kids in Australia” can produce different brands. For Australian Shopify stores:

  • Include the location in your tracking questions, because that is how Australian shoppers often ask.
  • Make your Australian presence obvious on your site: AUD pricing, Australian delivery information, an Australian address or ABN where appropriate, and Australian spelling.
  • Earn mentions in Australian sources: local publications, Australian review sites, gift guides and community discussions. Local questions may lean on local sources.
  • State local facts clearly where relevant, such as shipping areas, returns and any regulatory details that apply to your category. Precise, local facts are easy to quote.
  • Check answers without a location. They may lean towards larger international brands, so check your own results and win the location-specific questions first.

Mistakes that keep brands out of ChatGPT

  1. Blocking OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt or through a security tool, often without knowing.
  2. Marketing copy instead of facts. “Our best-ever formula” gives ChatGPT nothing to quote.
  3. Key information in images. Ingredient lists and size charts in images are hard for machines to read.
  4. Thin collection pages. A grid of products with no text can’t answer a “best for” question.
  5. Inconsistent brand details across your site, socials and listings.
  6. No third-party mentions. If nobody else talks about you, there is little for an AI tool to go on.
  7. Mass-produced AI content. Generic, unoriginal posts give an AI tool little reason to pick you over anyone else.
  8. Not measuring. Without a baseline, you can’t tell what worked.

Key takeaways

  • Ranking in ChatGPT means being cited, mentioned or shown as a product result in its answers.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking GPTBot (training) is a separate decision.
  • Answer buyers’ questions directly on the right pages: “best for” on collection pages, specifics on product pages, comparisons in guides.
  • Specific product facts, correct structured data and consistent brand information make you easier to recommend.
  • Mentions on credible third-party sites are worth building, even though OpenAI doesn’t publish how it weighs them.
  • Measure monthly with a fixed question set, GA4 referrals and AI visibility tools.

FAQs

Allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site, then publish pages that answer buyers’ questions clearly and specifically. Add correct structured data, keep brand facts consistent across the web, and earn mentions in reviews, roundups and publications. Track a fixed set of questions monthly and fill the gaps you find. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation.

Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?

OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and it does not publish a ranking formula. We can’t tell you how much Google’s rankings feed into ChatGPT. In practice, clear, relevant, trusted pages tend to help in both places, but treat Google rankings and ChatGPT visibility as related, not the same.

What is OAI-SearchBot?

OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI’s crawler for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. It is controlled separately from GPTBot, which is for training.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is a business decision. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. OpenAI says search appearance is controlled by OAI-SearchBot, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot. Many stores allow the search crawler and choose separately on the training one.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT?

On our AI SEO service, structural work goes live within 30 days and first citations usually appear in 60 to 90 days. Nobody can guarantee a citation. Results vary by category, competition and how much your brand is already mentioned elsewhere.

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?

In Google Analytics 4, open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition and filter on a session source containing “chatgpt”. Many ChatGPT links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, but tagging is not guaranteed, so treat the figure as a minimum. For visibility, run the same buyer questions in ChatGPT each month and record who is named.

Can a small Shopify store rank in ChatGPT?

It can happen, but it is never guaranteed. Assistants tend to favour clear answers over brand size, and the parts you control are specific pages, consistent facts and genuine mentions. Start with niche “best for” questions where you can give the clearest answer.

Get your store into ChatGPT’s answers

ChatGPT is already answering questions in your category. The question is whether your brand is one of the names in the answer.
